Yes, I did. There were elements that I agreed wholeheartedly with, especially relating to the direction libraries are taking these days.

I fear for our libraries! My childhood owed so much to them. And my mother’s sanity, at it was a place up the road where she could take us rain or shine.

In Australia I believe their future is safe as they are morphing into ‘community hubs’ offering internet access, computer classes (including online dating!), help filling out forms etc. All quite laudable but recently the library at which I work pulped 4000 non fiction books to make space for computers. The powers that be have lost sight of the self education origins of public libraries. Heaven help anyone looking for a quiet place to read or study. The saddest thing is that we all get SO excited on the days we het asked a genuine reference query.
