O come and hear the mighty Tigers roar.
This is our year – a finals’ spot we seek.
See Dusty, Riewoldt, Cotch and Rioli soar.
Our breathing stops, we see our winning score,
We show them all that Richmond is not meek.
O come and hear the mighty Tigers roar,
For Hardwick has put pride in us once more.
And on the ground we do all havoc wreak,
As Dusty, Riewodlt, Cotch and Rioli soar.
We know at times our faithful hearts are sore
Yet cheer we will week after endless week.
O come and hear the mighty Tigers roar.
We slaughter Carlton like we have before,
But if we stumble still we will not weep
For Dusty, Riewoldt, Cotch and Rioli soar.
The game’s begun, we seize the ball once more.
We know this year we’ll have a winning streak.
So come and hear the mighty Tigers roar,
See Dusty, Riewoldt, Cotch and Rioli soar.
The incomparable Richo (Matthew Richardson) – for me the game hasn’t been the same since he retired.

The AFL home and away season 2017 began last Thursday with the Richmond Tigers soundly thrashing their old enemy Carlton. This villanelle is my homage to the unquenchable hope that starts every season. I’m happy to admit that this villanelle is not the best example of the form and the refrain is forced but how could I leave out mention of Daniel Rioli? Please read it as an expression of enthusiasm rather than skill.
