This is an engaging first novel, categorized as historical romance, better described as historical fiction with a strong romance element. It is the story of Landra Andrews’ growth from childhood to womanhood and her struggle against both family and a narrow society to live and love on her own terms. Set in north Florida in the 1890s, the historical background is well researched and the physical environment and realities of farm life vividly created. The characterization is well drawn with the motivation of all those in Landra’s life understandable and realisitic. Landra herself is an engaging narrator, not perfect (as in life, none of the characters are) but someone admirably resilient, a character the reader can truly care for.
The author’s prose is fluent with moments of genuine humour where I found myself laughing aloud. The use of accent for some characters added to the realism of the story.
